Do I need to file a State tax return?

Updated: Jan 13

Well... that depends! And we are here to help you figure it out.

Now if you're thinking you're only due to receive a small refund from your state, or you departed or returned from offshore to a State in the calendar year you may be tempted not to file, especially if it costs more to file your state than what you'd get back from them.

However, this decision can come back to haunt you later. State tax law – not your refund amount – determines whether or not you're required to file.

Many states require that you file a state tax return if you filed a federal return, regardless of your anticipated refund amount.

Select your state for info about their filing requirements (or state contact information if they don't provide their filing requirements online).

Take our 60 second tax quiz to find out if you qualify

If you qualify for our service after taking our quiz then you are one of the majority of US expats working abroad that does not need an expensive tax service to file your US tax return. We can help you get your taxes done easily, accurately and for a reasonable fee. There are many companies out there offering expat tax services for flat fees but just like how sensible drivers end up paying more for car insurance because of careless drivers, you end up paying more for tax preparation because of other clients who have more complicated tax filing requirements than you. We don't think that's fair. We own and operate successful expat tax practices for clients with a lot more going on.  We created US Tax Global to help people like you so that you get the benefit of our world class services at a fraction of the cost.
